Lovely scenery (but it rains a lot); small and easy to get around. Monastery tour claimed to be in English but guide (a monk) was almost incomprehensible and just rambled on about Buddhist philosophy instead of telling us about what we were actually seeing.

Xiahe was my first introduction to Tibetan religion and culture. It takes some effort to visit if you are travelling by coach, but it is worth it.
We did the Xiahe loop by coach, ( Lanzhou- Xiahe- Xining). Fantastic scenery!
We enjoyed eating at Tara and at the Nomad. They are both located near the entrance to the monastery.
